Spoilers below, of course.

Well, now we know why everyone didn’t die during the Battle of Winterfell.

The penultimate episode of “Game of Thrones” was even deadlier, as Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) turned all Mad Queen and used Drogon to take out everyone in and around King’s Landing.

On Mother’s Day of all days!

We lost a slew of characters. And although some possibly earned their fates ― Varys (Conleth Hill), c’mon now ― it doesn’t mean we’re not mourning their deaths.

Valar morghulis.

  • Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)
    Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey)
    HBO
Cause of death: Although she was one of the biggest baddies on the show, Cersei is simply crushed by the rubble of the Red Keep after Dany's (Emilia Clarke) attack on King's Landing. Fittingly, her brother-lover Jaime is by her side.

Some last words: What is there to say? We surely saw this coming, but losing a character like Cersei is never easy. She will most certainly go down as one of the most entertaining, and evil, characters in TV history.

On one hand, it was sad to watch her die on Mother's Day -- as she loved her children more than anything. On the other, she deserved this.
  • Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
    Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)
    HBO
Cause of death: After fatally stabbing Euron (Pilou Asbæk), Jaime suffers bad wounds before eventually being crushed in the Red Keep with Cersei.

Some last words: Just when you thought he had the best redemption arc of the entire show, Jaime goes back to Cersei and leaves Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) in the dust of the Battle of Winterfell. We're glad he's gone, because how could he!

Oh, right, he's "hateful," like his twin sister-lover.
  • Varys (Conleth Hill)
    Varys (Conleth Hill)
    HBO
Cause of death: Dany executes Varys for treason after he tries to back Jon Snow's (Kit Harington) claim to the throne. She scorches him with dragon fire, as promised.

Some last words: One of the most intelligent characters on the show, Varys was horribly underused in the final season. (Where were all those little birds?) But, we'll remember his cunning behind-the-scenes masterwork for years to come. A true legend who knew what a Targaryen queen was capable of.
  • Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaeck)
    Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaeck)
    HBO
Cause of death: Jaime fights him in a fit of jealous rage, and gives him a final, twisty stab to the chest.

Some last words: So long, Captain Jack Sparrow. Good riddance.

    That's all.
  • The Golden Company
    The Golden Company
    HBO
Cause of death: Daenerys Targaryen. In the first 10 seconds of the battle ...

Some last words: The Golden Company was demolished pretty quickly by Dany and her forces during the Battle of King's Landing. You should've brought the elephants, dudes.
  • The Hound (Rory McCann)
    The Hound (Rory McCann)
Cause of death: During the long-awaited Cleganebowl, The Hound, also known as Sandor Clegane, dies alongside his Frankenstein brother, The Mountain. After a few blows to the face, they both fall into a swarm of fire, fittingly.

Some last words: Undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters of the show, The Hound never failed to make us laugh and/or cry. His scenes with Arya (Maisie Williams) will go down in history, as will lines like: 'Fuck the water, bring me wine!"
  • The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson)
    The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson)
    HBO
    Cause of death: Cleaganebowl.

Some last words: There's not much to say about The Mountain, formerly Gregor Clegane. He was a murderer and rapist who was killed by his younger brother for being a terrible person. And, at one point, he was turned into a baby-faced zombie monster. That pretty much covers it.
  • Qyburn (Anton Lesser)
    Qyburn (Anton Lesser)
    HBO
    Cause of death: The Mountain.

Some last words: Ah, Qyburn. Cersei's Hand of the Queen, aka the Mouth of Sauron, and an evil genius who brought The Mountain back from the dead. Unfortunately, he died by his own creation after trying to boss The Mountain around. There's probably something poetic about that. But also, yeah, just don't go getting in The Mountain's baby face.
  • Almost Everyone In King's Landing
    Almost Everyone In King's Landing
    HBO
    Cause of death: Daenerys Targaryen.

Some last words: King's Landing is the capital of Westeros. Ed Sheeran once called it the "worst place in the world." Now, yes, it is.
